Green Screen by Do Ink

The Green Screen app by Do Ink allows users to easily create places video recordings on top of images or other videos using a green screen. Images and videos can be imported into the app. The app automatically recognizes green screens and filters them out. Three images or videos can be layered in the app. When using the layering tool, put the image that should be in front on the top. Animations created in the Do Ink Animation app can be included in the green screen videos. Completed projects can be exported to the iPad's photo gallery.

Do Ink Animation

Do Ink Animation allows you to add animation to your drawings. These animations can be created flipbook style by adding new frames. Editing a series of frames gives the illusion of motion. The animations can also be created as a composition, where users layer images on top of each other and customize the path each image takes on the screen. Created animations can have no background, or can be given a background color and used in a green screen video. These animations can be used for story telling or for having students illustrate a process.

Explain Everything

Explain Everything is a white board app that allows teachers to create lessons or students to explain a process. It can also be used for digital story telling. Pictures and texts can be added to the presentation and audio can be recorded. The program is slightly more advanced than Educreations in that slides can be rearranged and completed projects can be uploaded to YouTube.

Pages

Pages is a word processing app designed for the iPad. The app allows you to adjust margins, fonts, insert charts, insert tables, and insert pictures. Pictures can be cropped from within the app and texts automatically wrap around the pictures. Comments can be added throughout the document. Documents can be shared between users allowing for real time collaboration. Shared documents can be sent as a PDF or as a Microsoft Word document.

Keynote

Keynote allows you to create presentations from the iPad. These presentations can be viewed from the iPad, sent to another Apple device for viewing, or saved as a PDF file. Templates are available to help design the presentations. The fonts and colors can be changed on the templates to meet your needs. Transitions and animations can be added to the presentations. Links can be embedded into the presentation directing viewers to websites or other parts of the presentation. A remote feature allows you to download a Keynote remote to an iPhone or another device to control the presentation.

Comic Life is a comic strip app that allows students to create and narrate stories in an appealing way. The app can be used to create posters or comic books and export them to the iPad's Camera Roll. Templates are available or students can start from scratch.

Ooops

Ooops is a math app designed to help students understand order of operations. Students are given equations missing parenthesis. Parenthesis must be added in the correct location to make the equations correct. Students can adjust the level of difficulty in the app to meet their needs.

Sketch Explorer

Sketchpad Explorer is a math app that allows you to manipulate objects on the screen and investigate mathematical principles. Topics range from elementary math to geometry and algebra. Each topic contains a brief description of the topic and instructions for how to manipulate the objects on the screen.

The Protractor 1st is a digital protractor that reads both Degrees and Radians. The app can also be used to convert between units by showing both values for each measurement.

Play2Prep

Play2Prep is a test preparation app that focuses on the ACT and SAT. Users create a log in and participate in daily practice tests. The practice tests are split up by subject and provide feedback about test results. The app allows users to participate in 15 practice questions per day. More questions can be earned by sharing the app with other people.

Sheets

Google Sheets is an app that allows you to create Microsoft style spreadsheets online. These spreadsheets are stored on a Google Drive account and can be downloaded from any device with internet access. The Sheets app allows users to share documents with individuals and groups. Docs

Google Docs is an app that allows you to create Microsoft style documents online. These documents are stored on a Google Drive account and can be downloaded from any device with internet access. Puppet Pals


The Puppet Pals Director's Pass app allows students to create animations. They can select from a wide range of characters including famous people, fairy tale characters, animals, and even zombies. Characters can also be created using images of people. Students record voices and move the characters in order to create an animated video. Completed videos can be exported to the iPad's photo gallery. Click here for an example of how my chemistry students used this app.

There is a free version of the app that does not include the Director's Pass. The free version has limited characters and does not allow you to create your own characters.

Educreations

Educreations is a white board app that allows you to create lessons and share them with your students. It is necessary to create a free account in order to save the lessons you create. The program allows teachers to create classes and students add themselves to the class. Students and teachers can create and share lessons. The app allows you to import images from the iPad's photo gallery and records audio as you describe the images. It also records anything you draw on the screen in real time. The information on the screen can be set up as slides that can be scrolled through as you create your lesson.

Constitution

This app provides a digital version of the constitution. Use the menu to jump to particular articles or amendments. The app also includes information about each of the signers of the Constitution.

Pinterest

Pinterest is designed to share ideas. While it is often used for crafts, there are many applications for it in the classroom. A free Pinterest account is required in order to use the app. The app allows you to create idea boards which are like online bulletin boards. Ideas are pinned to these boards. Students and teachers can put together boards about topics throughout history, travel, books, science, or any other subject.

Quizlet

Quizlet is an app designed to help enhance memorization. Flash cards and matching games are used to help build vocabulary. A search feature allows you to find flash card sets that have been created by other people. It is also possible to create an account, design your own flash card sets, and assign them to your students.

Pulse News

The Pulse News app communicates with news sources from around the world and allows you to read the articles. Users can customize which sites they view articles from. These articles can be read online, shared through social media, emailed, or marked as favorites.

Symbaloo

Symbaloo is an online bookmarking tool that helps you organize sites you visit often and makes them easy to find from any device. Users can create multiple webmixes to organize their bookmarks. These webmixes can be made public or shared with select groups of people. This is a great way to provide students with a group of web resources on a topic. Teachers can make their web mixes public and share them with students using a QR Code.

QuickGraph

Quick Graph functions like a graphing calculator for your iPad. Enter an equation and the app will produce the graph. Several equations can be added to the same graph. Users have the option of zooming in on different parts of the graph. Three dimensional views of the graph are available. Graphs can be copied to the iPad's photo gallery or emailed.

Skitch

Skitch is a photo editing app. Images from the iPad's photo album can be cropped and customized. Add arrows, text, and pixelated regions to the photos. The new version of this app will open PDF files and can be used to annotate documents. Skitch includes a map feature. Users can type in an address and the app will take a screen shot of the map, allowing arrows and text to be added to the map. Completed images can be emailed or saved to the iPad's photo album.


Skitch has been acquired by Evernote and will communicate with that app.

History Line

History line is a game that allows students to put events from history in order. Students can play in single player or multi player mode. The multi player mode requires connecting devices using Bluetooth. The game splits American history into different time periods and includes key events from those time periods.

Word Ref

Word Ref is a translator app. It includes Spanish, French, Italian, Arabic, and several other languages. Once you have selected a language, a word can be typed in English or in the chosen language. The translation of the word will be given along with the definition in both languages. The app will also allow you to listen to the word being spoken.

Prezi

Prezi allows you to create interactive presentations. It is necessary to create a free Prezi account in order to save your presentations. There are templates available to help achieve particular presentation designs. Text, images, and movies can be added to your presentations.

Past versions of this app only allowed you to view Prezis, while a web browser was necessary to create them. The updated version of the app allows you to create, edit, and view Prezis.

EBSCOhost

EBSCOhost is a catalog of journal article with search features to help users filter their results. An abstract is available for all articles and the full text version of the article is available for some of the articles. The settings can be adjusted so that only articles with the full text available will show. The information on the articles, including a PDF of the full text version when it is available, can be read on the screen or emailed.

Cost: The app is free. Licensing is required for some services.

Popplet

Popplet is an app that allows you to make concept maps. The free version of the app is called Popplet Lite. The thoughts in your concept maps are called Popplets. Each Popplet can be customized by changing the text, adding images, drawing pictures, or changing colors. Popplets can be placed in different places on the screen and connected to each other.

Completed concept maps can be emailed as a PDF or saved as a picture. One major draw back of the free version of the app is that the saved images do not have a very high resolution. You will quickly loose clarity if you try to zoom in on the images. Students should make sure they can read everything on the screen (no zooming necessary) when saving images.

iMotion

iMotion is a time lapse app that allows you to combine a series of photos. The amount of time between photos can be adjusted or the user can control when each photo is taken. This app also has a remote feature allowing another device to be used as a remote that controls when the photos are taken. This requires downloading another app called "iMotion Remote" onto the other device. Completed videos can be saved to the iPad's photo gallery. Audio could be added to the video using other apps, such as iMovie.

Solve Outbreak

Solve Outbreak is a case study app put out by the Center for Disease Control. Students are presented with case studies of disease outbreaks. Their role is to use clues to determine what is causing the outbreak and how to contain it. The free version of the app has 12 case studies for students to solve. Each case study includes clues, pictures, information about diseases, and tips to help students along the way.

iTalk

iTalk is an audio recorder. This app is very simple to use and makes it easy to create audio files. There are three settings that allow you to adjust the quality level of the file. Recordings can be emailed.

Captions

The Captions app allows you to add captions to photos. Images can be imported from the iPad's photo album. The shape, color, and size of the captions can be customized. When you are done editing your photo, it can be exported to the photo album for use in other apps.

3D Brain

The 3D Brain app allows you to rotate different views of the brain to get a three dimensional picture of its anatomy. The app will color code and label the different parts of the brain. Selecting different structures in the brain will bring up case study information about how different parts of the brain affect behavior. A search feature allows you to search for specific structures or behaviors.

Drop Box

Dropbox provides online file storage and sharing. You will need to create a free Dropbox account. Dropbox can be added to any of your devices and your PC. You can share files and folders with individuals or groups of people. Setting up a folder for a class is a great way to give students access to documents.

A file storage app is important for iPads because large files, like videos, cannot be emailed from the iPad.

The VoiceThread app allows you to create video lessons for your students. You can import images and add text or voice comments to them. It is possible to create student accounts for your class.

Nearpod

Nearpod allows you to set up interactive presentations for your students. Teachers will need to set up a free Nearpod account and create the presentations from a web browser. Presentations previously created in PowerPoint can be saved as a PDF file and uploaded to Nearpod. Students view the presentation on individual devices (can be android, iPad, or PC). Interactive features such as surveys and quizzes can be inserted into the presentation. Teachers control the pace of the presentation and can monitor the number of students participating on their individual devices. A drawing feature allows students to draw in their answers and teachers have the option of sharing their answers with the rest of the class (the students name is not included). A report of any answers submitted is emailed to the teacher after the presentation.

The Nearpod store has presentations about many subjects available to download and edit. There are a variety of free and paid presentations.

The free version of the app allows teachers to have up to 30 students at a time participate in a presentation. There are paid versions of the app that allow more students and also have a homework feature. Here is a blog post of mine about Nearpod.

Zite

Zite is a reading app that uses your preferences to suggest articles for you to read. You can edit your preferences at any time. Your feedback about the articles helps the app predict what type of articles you may like to read in the future. You can also search for articles and make them available to read offline.

Coolibah

Coolibah is an app that allows you to create digital scrapbooks. Import images from your photo gallery to be included in your scrap book. Change the background, add text, and add frames to your photos. The Gallery section of the apps has digital kits you can download to customize your scrap books. While many of these have a cost, there are about 30 free kits available. (The gallery takes several minutes to download).

Completed scrap book pages can be saved to the iPads photo gallery or emailed.

Nova Elements

Nova Elements is based off of the Nova video Hunting the Elements. The video is available to watch from the app. There is also an interactive periodic table and an element game. In the game, students build every day objects by assembling the elements that make them up. Students build atoms by adding protons, neutrons, and electrons. The voice of David Pogue narrates the game. The interactive periodic table has videos about the elements and allows you to build different types of atoms.

Tellagami

Tellagami allows you to create a character and record your voice for the character to speak. The free version of the app comes with limited options for your character's appearance. The paid version of the app allows you to type what you would like the character to say and choose a style of voice. The short animations you create are called "Gamis" and can be sent as an email or text message.

Drive

Google Drive offers online file creation, storage, and sharing. A free Google account is necessary to use this app. This particular app is set up to manage files. If you try to create a document or spreadsheet, you will be prompted to download Google's "Docs" or "Sheets" app. The documents and spreadsheets you create can be edited by multiple people on different devices at the same time.

The files you create will be available from any device you have downloaded the app to and at http://drive.google.com. The Drive app allows you to share files and folders with individuals or groups of people. Setting up a folder for a class is a great way to give students access to documents.

A file storage app is important for iPads because large files, like videos, cannot be emailed from the iPad.

Periodic Table

This app includes an interactive periodic table. Clicking on each element gives general information about the element as well as an electron dot diagram. The periodic table can be color coded to show properties such as state of matter and type of element. There is an interactive temperature feature that illustrates how changing the temperature changes the states of matter of all of the elements. The Help section gives general information and definitions about the parts of the periodic table.

Elements 4D

Elements 4D is a chemistry app that makes elements appear to be three dimensional on the iPad's screen. In order to use the app, you must go to this website and print the paper blocks. Once you have printed and folded the paper blocks, open the app, click "Start 4D," and point the iPads camera at the block. The block becomes a three dimensional view of the element in question. Pointing the camera at two elements together gives a three dimensional view of the compound they create. (Note that wooden blocks can be ordered through the Elements 4D website).

Evernote

Evernote is a note taking app that organizes notes, pictures, audio files, and video files for you. It will sync with any other devices you have the app installed to. Your notes are also available through the Evernote website. It is easy to search for text within the notes. Notes can be "tagged" to make them easy to sort.

Story Time

The Demibooks Storytime app allows you to download interactive children's stories. The stories include animations, audio effects, and narration.

Duolingo

Duolingo is an app that helps users learn to speak foreign languages. Spanish, French, German, Italian, and Portuguese are just a few of the languages available. Each language course begins with a pretest that allows users to place out of certain lessons. The lessons have a game type feel to them and give immediate feedback. Users hear how words are pronounced, see how they are printed, and view many pictures to demonstrate concepts.

Easy Bib

The EasyBib app allows you to search for any books that you need a citation for. The app generates the citation in MLA, APA, and Chicago format. A barcode feature makes books easy to find by scanning the barcode. The citations can then be emailed and used in documents.

Lewis Dots

Lewis Dots is an app that allows you to create Lewis Structures for different compounds. There are 18 common elements available for use on the app. Selecting one of these elements causes a diagram of the atom to appear showing valence electrons. Electrons from neighboring atoms can be connected to form single, double, and triple bonds. The atoms of a molecule can be moved around to indicate the shape. Completed lewis structures can be saved as an image to the iPads photo library.

World In Figures

World In Figures is an app developed by The Economist to provide information about countries. There is a ranking tool that allows users to see how countries rank in their sizes, demographics, health issues, political issues, tourism, and many other types of data. A compare tool allows users to compare the ranking data for specific countries. Detailed country profiles are available for almost 200 countries. Countries can be chosen from a list, a zoom enabled map, or a zoom enabled globe.

Edmodo

Edmodo is a program designed to facilitate communication between teachers and their students. Teachers create classes and students enroll using a group code, preventing the teacher from having to set up a roster.

Edmodo is very well organized and allows teachers to share files and a calendar with their classes. There is also a message board where students can post ideas and respond to each other. It is secure in that the teacher can remove people from the course. Students are allowed to communicate with their teacher and post to the class page. They are not allowed to communicate with each other privately.
